The coffee was very good quality and our cakes were so nicely presented and very tasty. We had our morning tea on a table outside but the interior is really lovely and welcoming and the staff were very courteous and pleasant. After a road trip where so many cafes were pretty ordinary and slapdash, a good one like the Catching Pen really stands out.
Brigitte2022-04-08delicious lunch After making the mistake of stopping in Woodville to try and find decent food on our way to Napier from Wellington, we checked out the reviews of The Catching Pen and swung by for lunch. Initially there weren’t many tables available, so we sat outside while trucks roared by as we hit some keys on the out-of-tune piano sitting on the footpath outside. As we were waiting, some tables freed up inside so we wandered in and enjoyed the decor while we waited. It wasn’t long before our food and coffee arrived, and it was absolutely delicious. we had the keto meal with eggs, bacon and mushroom while the kids enjoyed wedges and fish n chips. The bathroom was clean, and staff were lovely and friendly. this will definitely be our place to stop next time we travel this journey.
Curious Kiwi2021-12-09Service, Quality Food, reasonable prices. This little gem has it all, service, quality food, reasonable prices and comfortable atmosphere. This place is the real deal. I called in late on a Wednesday afternoon for coffee, tea, bite to eat and a business meeting halfway between offices. In these uncertain times, wouldn’t it be great if travellers took the time to stop and support these small businesses instead of speeding through small towns only supporting the large multinationals dispensing mediocrity. Take the challenge!!

ChrisandDavid20162021-10-08Perfect little cafe! Thanks to great reviews, this was our place of choice en route to Hawke's Bay. What a great gem this cafe is in Dannevirke. As we had not long before eaten breakfast prior to leaving home, this was the perfect coffee stop. Coffee was great, service was welcoming and friendly. We loved the photographic mural on the wall. The cabinet food looked great and so did menu food, that we saw others enjoying. We will be stopping on our homeward journey.
